Doves? Butterflies?
After consulting a number of people (most of which are fellow brides-to-be or w@wies), Joven and I decided not to release doves nor butterflies on our wedding.
For the following reasons: (1) I'm scared to hold a bird in my hands (2) we pity the birds/butterflies in cages (3) when they are released there's the tendency for a lot of people to duck and be scared (4) when the people run after them and try to recapture them, they look so api. So to minimize the trouble for everybody, no flying living thing will be released. =)
When I inquired with my co-w@wies they gave very good inputs on why there are doves or butterflies on weddings. Here are some of their replies:
MK - An Indian legend says that if anyone desires a wish to come true they must capture a butterfly and whisper that wish to it. Since they make no sound, they can't tell anyone but the Great Spirit. So by making the wish and by releasing the butterfly it will be taken to the heavens and be granted.
Layah - For century's wedding couples have been releasing dove as symbols of their eternal love for each other. The white color of the Doves symbolizes purity – that both Bride and Groom are pure to each other – they are honest and open, beginning their lives as one “from this day forward.” Doves choose one partner and mate for life. The Doves flying home together, symbolizes the couple starting off on their journey to start a home of their own. Some cultures believe if a Bride and Groom see a White Dove on their wedding day it is a symbol of good luck and good fortune that will last throughout their marriage.
It kindda assured me since there were a number of w@wies who will not be having doves in their wedding. Thanks to the feedback of Mai, Mik, Nette and Jen. =)

Hey, Dyonne!
Like some couples, we chose not to have a dove release. Not that I hate birds, I don't, I'm just petrified of holding one. We didn't actually feel that there was something lacking with our wedding just because we didn't have this. Although, some still asked us to release the doves that the caterers brought. Kulit nila noh! Sabi na ngang no doves eh. Gusto ko na nga maglagay ng "No animals were harmed in any way in the course of this wedding!" Hehe!
So, go ahead and forego of this issue. It really won't make a difference.
